Quote:

Information Design or ID as it may be called
Note: please do not confound ID with Instructional Design as the two are really different) is a field that involves Defining, Planning, and Shaping of the contents of a message and the environments it is presented in with the intention of achieving particular objectives in relation to the needs of users. Information Design can be dated back to times when human beings first found a need to communicate with one another. The term “Information Design” came to be known in 1970 when it was appeared as a multidisciplinary area of study. Information Design actually defines the transfer of complex data into a form, generally into a form of visual representation that is easily understood by the user. This task of designing the complex information demands logical thinking and a combination of analytical, editorial and graphic abilities. However, the key focus while designing the information always remains the content. In other words, Information Design deals with the information in one or more information units. In addition, it includes various aspects such as industrial design, content design, page design, Web site design, and so on. Thus, the output can be in the form of an information plan, Design document, or a deliberate object or a set of objects. The people who practice Information Design often called Information Designers asks questions such as how end-users learn or prefer to learn and how will the users use the particular information. The Information Designers may also ask questions about how to design information for end-users who have a different cultural divide. So, in a way we can say that Information Design or rather Information Designers focuses on not just how the information will appear to the end-user but also how effective will the information be for the end-user.
