Career Advice
Dear All,
I work as a Sr.Specialist in a Supply Chain organization. I have work experience of 3.5 years. Meanwhile I have done a Online Certification in Technical Writing. I love writing and I have used my Technical Writing skills in my present work and created a manual too.
I would like to switch over my career as a Technical Writer. But will my 3.5 years of experience would be useless? Will I be considered only as a Fresher? What would be the starting salary for a Fresher? Please share your thoughts..
Initially, you might be considered as fresher but chances are you can grow much faster than others because of your other experience. But yes, you need to learn the basics of technical writing before that.

Hi,
If you apply for any job, the recruiters ask you two things - one total IT experience and relevant IT experience. Although you may be having 3.5 years of total IT experience, you would be considered as a fresher in terms of relevant IT experience and work expectations from you. However, there are good chances that you may get a slight higher salary than that of a fresher. Imagine your current pay as Sr.Specialist is 4 Lpa and a fresher in technical writing may get 2.5 Lpa, then because of your previous IT experience, you may be considered somewhere around 3.5 - 4 Lpa. Overall, I would like to say that if salary does not matter most, you can shift your career to Technical Writing.

Srip
Thank you so much for the comments. I wanna concentrate only on my career rather than the salary! Thanks once again...
I have a MS in IT from USA, work experience of more than 10 years in IT mostly in the education sector (RIT USA, NIIT, APtech, Colleges etc), my last designation was HOD IT of a polytechnic.
I am planning to enter the corporate sector as a technical writer.I have a flair for writing.
My questions are
1. Is this change justified? My other option would be corporate trainer.
2. I feel I have the qualification and IT experience, but not the exact skills like Frame Maker,Robohelp,SnagIt. Should I join a training institute and learn the skills? The institute seems to give leads and placements too.The cost is arround 18,000 .Is it justified?
Ur guidance will be of immense help to me.
Thanking you in anticipation .
