Only english in degree wont

Only english in degree wont help in Tech Writing

English is Primary Language

English is primary language, so communication is necessary not degree.

Only English Degree

Hi,

A Degree in English doesn't qualify anyone to be a Technical Writer. In fact, any decent degree will suffice if you have a good grasp of the 'English' language.

What I like about this profession is that we are a mixture of various educational backgrounds. However, the goal remains the same -- "to produce quality documentation".:)

Language skills are mandatory; not a degree in English.

Degree assures you that a degree holder has earned the quality in the considered field. Creativity needs interest and a burning desire to get the break through within the task ever faced before.
Degree provides you a discipline that makes your path comparatively smoother. It is a kind of techniques that keep you away from certain types of mistakes. So, its like a routine following. It is not an ultimate substitute of creativity and invention.

Its the taste for the language, a degree in English adds to it

Language skills are something which is inside you, maybe comes along with you, but along with that if you have a degree or a post graduation in the language it will definitely boost up your confidence and your taste.
I know many highly qualified professionals in other fields, who have very poor quality of English Language. Not meant to hurt anyone.

All that maters is how much

All that maters is how much you as a Technical writer have understood the subject matter. It is all about writing for the appropriate user, in a language which they can understand.

Agree

Absolutely agree. To my mind person should know English fluently but without any degree. Degree is necessary for humanitarian subjects. For example I know a lot of freelance writers that work without degree. They are gifted and skillful ppl. This is not a big deal.

The matter of the matter is what matters!

I too feel (and know!) that what matters is how close are you to an end-users' perspective. A degree in English, will only add weight to your resume. Therefore, to flourish in a field as technical as Writing, one must understand the matter of the matter!

Degree-Its necessity

Hii All,

I am happy to see the openions. I entirely agree with the openions on the necessity of a regular college degree. YES! degree is must to to get into a company as a technical writer to fullfill recruitment standards, but there is much more than a degree one technical writer should get familiar- Simple English. Clear,Consice and ability to understand the subject is mandatory..

In my view in addition to regular requirements of being a technical writer, one shold gain good listning skills. These skills can be amplified only when your heart and soul into the subject.

A professional training in technical writing is always a welcome thought for a toddler in technical writing field.

Friends load in with your valuable inputs..

Language Skills

Language skills are mandatory for a technical writer but masters in english is not mandatory. When I say language skills, it is all about the ability to present the data in clear, concise and understandable way. Only degree in english won't help to gain these skills.
