Quality courses in technical writing in Mumbai?
Hello,
I am looking for a good course in technical writing in Mumbai. Having done a fair amount of research, I have come across these three names: Technowrites, Commit Technologies and Ibruk. Being a novice to this field, I am unable to decide on which course to opt for. While some offer certification, Technowrites offers diploma in technical writing along with certification from STC India.
What I am looking for is good learning is this field. Besides, recognition of the certification also becomes important. So can anyone guide me whether the certification provided by these institutes is recognised in India as well as abroad, since in India we do not have colleges and universities offering courses in this field. Except for Symbiosis, all courses available in this domain are offered only by private institutes. Besides, the price points at which these institues offer courses also differ significantly, despite the course duration being more or less same. It will be very useful if someone could throw light on these queries.
Regards,
Archana
Hello Archana,
You are right that there is no college or university except for Symbiosis, offering Technical Writing courses in India. Even Symbiosis does not provide any practical training. It is a correspondence course. However, it is a useful course as it gives you a good understanding of concepts in this field. I have done my Technical Writing course from Synbiosis.
I am currently working with ibruk, Mumbai and can safely say that the training given here is very good. What you need as a trainee is not just theoritical knowledge of all concepts but also practical experience; and ibruk provides that. Please get in touch with us at 022-29204260.

Thanks vnvwriter, for your recommendation and that detailed reply!
Considering that most TW companies get business from IT, automobiles, engineering and telecom sectors, what impact does any slowdown in these industries have on technical writers. The IT and auto sectors, in particular, have gone through the slowdown phase in recent times, did this have any significant impact on technical writers? This is just to get a sense on the stability aspect, whether one can count on this career option as a long term bet?

Archana
Hi Vnvwriter,
Could you please let me know Ibruk's office timings, as I intend to go and meet them

Archana
Hello Archana,
Technical Writing is required in many fields as you have mentioned. It is quite obvious that any slow down in one of the fields will affect technical writing. However, that is the case for all jobs. If outsourcing is reduced, most of us would be unemployed. However, the good thing about technical writing is that the field is growing and people have realised the importance of technical writers. Organisations today, know that a document written by a technical writer will convey the required information more effectively than a document written by, say, a software developer.
Technical writers have developed an identiy of their own and are also respected. It is very difficult to predict the future of the sectors that you have mentioned but as long as technology is there, technical writers will be in demand. Who else will take the information more effectively to the end user other than a technical writer? Moreover, this profession is slated to grow at 18% until 2018.
This is your best chance. I must also add that the longevity of any career depends not only on the demand-supply factor but also on how good the employee is. If you become the best technical writer that you are capable of becoming, you should be serving this field for a long time. Outstanding people are respected and employable in all fields and technical writing is no exception.
