Companies that give a break into Technical Writing
Hi guys,
I am an MBA with 9 years of experience content industry [you will know if you see my earlier post - "Could anyone please help"] I have knowledge of technical writing but I don't have any hands-on experience on any of these tools. One of our friends [vnvwriter] has helped me with some amazing links to get some very good exposure to the tools.
Now coming to the QUESTION - DO WE HAVE ANY COMPANIES [ESPECIALLY IN HYDERABAD] THAT GIVE CONTENT PROFESSIONALS [OR EVEN FRESHERS] A BREAK INTO TECHNICAL WRITING?
Please advise...
Cheers,
Kamal Raj
Tech Total can help you.
Hello Kamal,
I do not know of companies in Hyderabad. However, you may look for opportunites anywhere in India at:
The above site will list jobs for all categories from various job portals. It is a central warehouse of all jobs. If you have not visited this site, vist it and follow the instructions below:
1. Open Internet Explorer and go to www.indeed.co.in.
2. There will be one box (What) on the left and another (Where) on the right.
3. In the What box enter Technical Writer and in the Where box enter Hyderabad.
This will list all Technical Writing jobs in Hyderabad. Similarly you can search for Technical Writing jobs in any other city in india by entering the appropriate city name in the Where box. If you do not enter anything in the Where box, the site will list all Technical Writing jobs in India.
You may also use the Advanced Search option to better customize your search.
I hope this helps.

vnvwriter.
Hey Vnvwriter,
Nice to see your message. thank you bro. I am aware of this site. Fortunately, this is the only job site that opens in our computers in my office. However, almost 90% of the companies [in search results too] are asking for experience. Some of the people who want to break into the field make a resume to suit the industry and make believe the IT company that they are well-versed. However, due to a horrible time crunch i am having now, I am not able to invest time to go through and learn from the links you gave me. Believe it or not I am doing my office work even after I go back home and that too till 1:00 am in the morning. I am also working on the weekends. Hope you understand my situation. In case there are no companies in Hyderabad [as I see], I don't mind relocating anywhere in India.
Why don't companies allow skilled writers to enter this field and train them on the tools and mould them to their requirements. Also, please let me know if there are any companies as such.
Thank you once again vnvwrtier
Please advise..
cheers,
kamal raj
Hello Kamal,
I appreciate your passion for writing and desire for getting into tech writing. I am also sorry that you are overloaded with work. Wish you the best and hope you will get out of this soon. It is never easy to be submerged into work until late in the nights and also during weekends.
In an ideal world, people who are good at writing will be recruited, trained and moulded as per the company's requirements. However, we are not living in an ideal world. Although this happens in software industry, I have never seen or heard of such a culture in tech writing. Companies usually want ready made people and those who can adjust to the work culture. Technical writers are expected to be the same.
By the way, there are job opportunities posted at twin-india also. I suggest you to keep checking the site for any appropriate opportunity.
Regards,
vnvwriter.
Hey Anonymous,
Thank you very much for your help. I did call them up and enquire about their course details and fee but did not ask if I could join them. I will surely try doing it.
Cheers,
Kamal

Hi Guys,
I would be thankful if any one answer my questions:
What are roles and responsibilities of a technical writer?
What is a release note and what is the structure of it ?
What an installation guide and what is the structure of it?
How the review process will go in a company?
How many review cycles required to finally publish a document?(avg)
Hi Ramyasri,
Here is the answers:
1. What are roles and responsibilities of a technical writer?
Responsibilities are:
To create audience facing documentation for their project or products like, Release Notes, Installation, Administration, Configuration, User, Online helps, and API reference guides.
Some companies even ask tech writers to review and proof read the proposals, marketting brochures, content for their websites, so on.
For Roles, I would recommend you to go through Job descriptions available in TWIN site.
2. What is a release note and what is the structure of it ?
Release Notes provides information on the current release of the product like new features included, bugs fixed, known issues and their workaround, system requirements to install.
The structure may vary according to company's requirements. In general it would be like:
1. Intro about the product
2. New features in the current release
3. System prerequisites
4. Known issues and workaround
5. Bugs fixed
3. What an installation guide and what is the structure of it?
Installation guide provides step by step information on installing the product along with their hardware and software requirements.
Structure would be like:
1. Intro about the product
2. Hardware and Software requirements
3. Step by Step by installation
4. Post installation configuration steps
4. How the review process will go in a company?
Review process will happen like this
1. Peer review
2. Technical review
3. Editorial review
5. How many review cycles required to finally publish a document?(avg)
Normally the review happens within the above review process. It depends on how the feedbacks are provided.
Hope this clarifies you.

Sundar
Hi Sundar,
Thanks for clarifying my questions. I have also another set of questions, which required clarification.
Who will review the documents?
How the technical writing process will go in a company?
Where the documents will be stored?
What is CMS?
Thanks&Regards
Ramyasri
Hi Ramyasri,
My answers to your questions:
Who will review the documents?
In general two reviews will happen, technical review and editorial review.
Technical review will be done by the developers, project leads, project/product managers, and also testing team.
Editorial review will be done by editors or senior tech writers.
How the technical writing process will go in a company?
In short, this process will start from understanding the writing requirements, type of audience, documents required to deliver, preparing effort estimation, gathering requirements from different sources like design documents, SRS, understanding the product through knowledge transfer from technical team and working with the product, reviewing it with various stake holders and releasing it.
What is CMS?
Content Management System (CMS), is a centralized reposity that helps to store the documents in a centralized location where other global teams can also access this simultaneously.
Where the documents will be stored?
In general, the documents will be stored in CMS or SVN or any centralized repository.
Hope this clarifies you.

Sundar
Hi Sundar,
Thank you so much. Please suggest me the best site for grammar practise and best site for technical interview questions. Give me some information regarding template, what it contains, how it will be used, and what is the difference between masterpage and template.
Regards,
Ramyasri
